Inaugurated in 2012, the R8 LMS Cup is Audi’s first single-make series, and also one of the most prestigious in Asia. Organised by Audi China, the 2016 season is held over six weekends and will visit the continent’s premier racetracks, including the Shanghai, Sepang and Korea F1 circuits. Like many other championships, the R8 LMS Cup features a diverse driver lineup, ranging from professional DTM, Endurance, GT and Touring Car racers (including Malaysian ex-F1 driver Alex Yoong) to passionate gentleman drivers who are in it just for the love of the sport.

Asia’s hottest one-make race series blazes into its 5th season with a brand new car, the 2nd gen R8 LMS. We catch up with the series in Sepang, Malaysia.


During the 24 hours the lead changed 35 times — a record in the event that has been held since 1970. After the race’s midpoint, either the number ‘28’ R8 LMS or its fiercest rival was running in front, depending on the pit stop sequence. In the end, the Belgian Audi team prevailed with a concentrated performance of its drivers and solid teamwork - Audi Sport Team WRT with Christopher Mies/Nico Müller/Edward Sandström/Laurens Vanthoor was 40 seconds faster than the BMW Team Marc VDS.

The third Nurburgring success for Audi in four years


From Zhuhai, the Cup heads to the Korea International Circuit in South Korea, prior to making its debut in Chinese Taipei, at the Penbay International Circuit. From there, the Cup travels to Malaysia in August, prior to marking another first for the series with two race weekends in support of the FIA World Endurance Championship. At Fuji from October 10 to 11 and at the Audi R8 LMS Cup season finale in Shanghai from October 31 to November 1, fans of the brand with the Four Rings will have a chance to see the Audi motorsport family unite, with the Cup and the Audi Sport WEC team racing alongside each other.

The two other Audi R8 LMS entries of B-Quik Racing, from Thailand, and MPC, from Australia, put in good performances with steady driving. B-Quik took second place in the GTC class, the second podium for Audi, while MPC finished the 12-hour race in sixth.

Audi RS 4 Avant Preview Drive

The RS 4 has landed! Audi invited us to get a taste of one of the first few units that breathed Singapore air. How could we refuse?


Last year, Frank Biela, Darryl O’Young and Marco Werner celebrated second place at the first run of the Audi R8 LMS in this race. All three drivers are part of the grid again this year, albeit in a different formation - the two former Audi factory drivers Biela and Werner will be supported by the Swiss Marcel Fässler who has won the Le Mans 24 Hours for Audi this year. The trio’s combined track record totals nine Le Mans successes. The second Audi R8 LMS will be driven by another former Le Mans winner, Seiji Ara. The Japanese will share the car with Darryl O’Young from HongKong and Alex Yoong. The Malaysian enjoys a particular bonus at his home round on account of his huge popularity as he is the only former Grand Prix racer in his country.

Two Audi R8 LMS cars will contest the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) at Sepang this coming weekend


Ortelli continued to lead the race as Kechele challenged Roda, but it took several laps before the Vita4One Ferrari 458 moved ahead and started to close the three seconds gap that Ortelli had managed to open up to his rivals. While Kechele was charging forward, Roda’s Porsche came under pressure from the two SOFREV ASP Ferrari’s of Ludovic Badey in the No. 20 Ferrari 458 and Julien Jousse in the No. 10 Ferrari 458.

Vita4One Ferrari Triumphs In Spain

The No. 1 Vita4One Ferrari 458 took its first victory in the Blancpain Endurance Series at Navarra in Spain, finishing 17 seconds ahead of the Belgian Audi Club Audi R8 LMS.


Pierre-Brice Mena now led the race in the No. 3 Hexis Aston Martin DBRS9 from the No. 40 Marc VDS Ford of Bas Leinders and the No. 1 Vita4One Ferrari. The Leinder’s Ford suffered the same fate as the Belgian Audi Club cars when a tyre blew out on lap 19 and had to return to the pits for a replacement promoting Nico Verdonck in the Vita4One Ferrari into second.
